November Art Sale
Thursday, 20 November - Sunday, 7 December 2025
Bidding for our current sale is now open: APOLOGY - Photographs: In this catalogue many of the photos have a distinct ORANGE hue about them. It has puzzled me as to why this is. Finally, we discovered the cause. In our ‘studio’ lighting we use a number of bulbs that give off a very white light. One of these failed some months ago and was replaced with a similar, but different bulb. This gave off a slightly ‘warm’ glow not immediately obvious to the naked eye but enough to give the photos an orangey tone. The bulb has since been replaced but it did not give us time to reshoot the affected photos. Please therefore keep in mind that when viewing the photos as they are not as ‘orange’ as the impression given. There are just under 800 entries. The photo on this page is a fine oil painting of Coal Hulks in Wellington Harbour from Te Aro, by Joseph Gaut (1860-1934) signed and dated 1888. It features as Lot number 56 in the current sale. Sale bids can be placed from 5pm, Thursday November 20. The sale then runs for 17 days, finishing from 6pm on Sunday, December 7.. It covers a wide range of art and historical material. There are no original photographs in this sale as we are holding a specialist photography sale with nothing but photos in a few days. There are over 500 entries in the photo sale. We have grouped all entries in this sale into one of seven categories as under: Watercolours Oil paintings Acrylic paintings Works on paper Photo prints (as opposed to original photos) Print & Graphics (all types*) Other types of art * Prints include Screen prints, Engravings, Etchings, Woodcuts, Silkscreen, Canvas prints, Giclee prints, Lithoprints (19th & 20th Cent.) This sale includes a number of of 19th Century engravings, matted and ready for framing with modest estimates, lower than international prices. BIDDING: If you bid on an item and you get the response RESERVE NOT MET you can continue to increase your bid by simply clicking on the bid button until you reach the reserve. For a note on ‘reserves’ see the next paragraph. Once you see the message RESERVE MET you can stop bidding knowing that you will have won the item unless you are outbid by someone else. When this happens you will be automatically sent an email. In the closing minutes of the auction you should monitor the sale online as an email notification is unlikely to reach you in time. NO RESERVES. For the first time a large number of items in this sale are offered at NO RESERVE. If you place an opening bid on an item and you see the message RESERVE MET you will have won that item unless you are outbid during the course of the sale. Only a relatively small number of items in tis sale carry the usual reserve (90% of low estimate). If your opening bid does not secure an item, chances are that by manually increasing your bid you may win it as the majority of items are listed with reserves of 80% or less of the published low estimate. DELIVERY: Finally, a word on delivery for those who are new to our site. If you are not able to collect your purchases we offer an inhouse packing/courier service on most small to medium sized artworks. Large or valuable works will need collection or professional packing. Call for details. We can also deliver to a number of North Island towns at attractive rates without the need for special packing. So long as you are able to collect from me in Central Auckland (Ponsonby Road, early afternoon) I can bring your purchases with me to Auckland on my next trip (Second week of December) and to Hutt Valley/Wellington, about the same time. We can also deliver to Taranaki / Manawatu and Hawkes Bay if warranted. Prices for this service are invariably cheaper than courier. I wish you successful bidding. Best regards, Henry Newrick Director
