John Gordon was the son of John Alexander Gilfillan and one of the 3 children who survived what is known in Wanganui as the Gilfillan massacre (1847). Following the tragedy he was taken to Australia by his father, Following his father's death in 1864 he returned to Wanganui where he did these engravinngs of Lamb Hill (where his sister lived).
